System decommissioning retires legacy applications while preserving secure access to their data for users, auditors and legal teams. Proceed plans and delivers decommissioning projects using SAP ILM and Proceed Cella, so you can cut run costs, lower risk, and simplify cloud and S/4HANA programmes. This page explains the business case, how we assess your landscape, how we extract, store and provide access, and what to expect from planning through to shut down.
System decommissioning service
Keep your data accessible while retiring legacy systems
Save money
Running and maintaining older systems can be very expensive because of infrastructure, hardware and software support costs, not to mention internal personnel costs. By retiring legacy systems, you can make savings of up to 80% of the total cost of ownership.
Drive sustainability
Typically, legacy systems have higher power consumption and space requirements compared to modern systems. By reducing and moving your data, you will be contributing towards your organisation’s environmental objectives.
Reduce business risk
Legacy system landscapes come with business risks. Older hardware can be unreliable, and some software may no longer be supported. Your organisation could also face large fines if these systems no longer comply with new legal or audit requirements.
Minimise opportunity costs
Maintaining older systems takes away resources both in terms of personnel and costs, when these could be better deployed on more innovative projects. Move these resources to strategic business priorities instead of ‘keeping the lights on’.
See up to 80% total cost of ownership savings through system decommissioning
Reduce the 15% of IT budgets typically spent on legacy applications.
In today’s ever-changing technological landscape with a drive for innovation, digitalisation and business knowledge, simplifying system environments has become business critical.
How Proceed can help
Decommissioning multiple redundant legacy systems can no longer be put on the back burner, but where do you start? This is where our expert team will help to assess your system environments and build a compelling business case and project plan. We will then go into realisation mode, all the way from the first piece of data being extracted until you can successfully shut down the legacy system.
Planning your system decommissioning project
The success of any project lies in the planning. We have over 20 years’ experience managing data management projects, so you can rest assured your decommissioning project is in safe hands.
Assessment
We review your current legacy system landscape, determining business requirements, space savings and overall costs.
Business case
We develop a business case model considering your existing costs and the overall costs of decommissioning.
Project plan
We create a project blueprint outlining each step, from getting your data into the new system, to shutting down your legacy systems.
If you want a clear overview of priorities, cost and risk drivers, typical use cases and the steps to plan safely, see the system decommissioning guide.
Realisation of your system decommissioning project
By using Proceed, the realisation of a decommissioning project is made easy. The extraction is robust and fast, access to the data is simple, and there are many storage options available. Ultimately, your organisation will be able to shut down legacy applications and release the associated costs.
Extraction

Products used for system decommissioning
Proceed Cella
Proceed Cella is our in-house software solution that was developed to make the decommissioning of systems hassle-free. The Proceed Cella platform provide users with access to all their legacy data and it includes user-friendly, “out-of-the-box” reporting, commonly used transaction views and all document attachments.
